Starting Small Is OK...Just Start

So, you've decided to start putting money aside. Great!

Starting small will help you establish a positive savings habit that you can build upon. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Every day, put at least $1—and any loose change you are carrying around—into a can or jar. At the end of the month, you should have around $50 to put into a savings account.
  • Give up costly habits such as smoking, playing the lottery, and buying coffee from vendors. Then put the money that you would have spent into your savings jar.
  • If you usually buy soft drinks from a vending machine, consider buying your favorites at the grocery store and bringing them to work or school. If you drink one daily, this can save you as much as 80¢ every day. That may not sound like much, but it adds up to savings of $192 each year!
  • Take advantage of product rebates and put the money you get into savings.
