After you’ve signed your lease but before you move in, schedule a walk-through with your landlord so you both can assess any existing damage to your unit. Take another walk-through when you move out so you aren’t billed for damage that you are not responsible for.
This list contains the basic areas to check. Be sure to add others that are specific to your apartment or rental house. After you complete the sheet, both you and the landlord should sign and date it. Keep one copy in your files and give the other copy to the landlord.
