Other Common Deductions

Taxes are not the only deductions you will see in your paycheck. Depending on your employer's benefits, you may see other deductions from your pay. Here are some common ones. Note that some of these are voluntary.

  • health insurance—the portion you pay for medical coverage
  • dental insurance—the portion you pay for dental coverage
  • life or disability insurance—if you arrange for these types of coverage through your employer
  • retirement plan—the amount you've chosen to put into your company's retirement plan
  • contributions to charities—if done through your employer
  • deductions for work-related expenses—sometimes these include parking and uniforms
  • deductions to purchase U.S. Savings Bonds if you wish
  • union dues
  • wage garnishment—a court-ordered withholding of part of your salary to pay child support or other debts
