TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES

Each summer, millions of families struggle to provide their children with nutritious meals when schools close for the summer and no longer provide meals through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. Although the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is intended to fill this gap, less than 20 percent of the more than 19.6 million children receiving a free or reduced price meal from the National School Lunch Program participate in the SFSP.

In these difficult economic times, even more children may face this hardship in the coming summer. The Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services would like to announce an opportunity in addition to the existing SFSP to leverage Federal funds to address childhood hunger.

Please join us on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at 12:00 – 1:00 PM EST by webinar to learn about using the American Recovery and Reinvestments Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Emergency Contingency Fund to help feed children this summer.

The American Recovery and Reinvestments Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) established a $5 billion Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Emergency Contingency Fund. A range of expenditures that support programs that feed children during summer months may constitute non-recurrent, short-term benefits, and thus be a potential use of TANF Emergency Contingency Fund. TANF Emergency Contingency Funds can be used for expenditures to support their participation in the program, and to help meet costs at existing sites. Examples include short-term leased or rented equipment, transportation services to transport food and/or children to feeding sites, recreational activities to attract more youth to program locations, pay for staff support to provide supervision and programming at summer feeding sites, and meal preparation costs that are not otherwise reimbursed under the Summer Food Service Program.

Colleagues from Health and Human Services Administration on Children and Families and a State Administrator will join me to discuss the funds. We look forward to you joining us.

Meeting Description:

ARRA BRANDING Webinar
California/Nevada Community Action Partnership
Pressented by Tim Reese, Executive Director, California/Nevada Community Action Partnership

Nationally, we have been working hard to expand community action services to more people than ever before. A critical element of our expanded activities is to efficiently and effectively “tell the story” of our efforts and results. To that end, the California/Nevada Community Action Partnership (Cal/Neva) has developed a program of education and outreach services – Fulfilling the Promise.

As part of this program, an ARRA logo was created. Additionally, a Fulfilling The Promise website www.fulfillingthepromise-us.org was created to showcase the many good things that each agency does in their local communities.

The good news is that the logo and branding are freely available for National CAP Network members to use across the country. Take this opportunity now secure the ARRA logo and branding developed by Cal/Neva for your use to ensure that public awareness is raised as the important efforts of our organizations are promoted.

Join us for a webinar on April 1 at 11 am PDT to learn more about the ARRA logo and the Fulfilling The Promise website and how you can benefit from this incredible opportunity.

Thank you for all that you do. We know that, together, we can help community action leave a lasting “defining moment” mark on your efforts to address the issues of poverty in this country.
